The Kampung Bukit Belimbing Firefly Park Resort in Kuala Selangor, Malaysia, is one of three places in this region where visitors can witness the brilliant sight of large groups of fireflies flashing in synchrony.

Touted as the “Eighth Wonder of the World”, this exciting activity is one of the must-visit attractions in Kuala Selangor. A boat takes passengers for an enjoyable ride along the Selangor River, where many colonies of fireflies have made their habitat around the branches of the “Berembang” trees that line the riverbank.

Here, the fireflies group together on the mangrove trees, beginning their display about one hour after sunset. The most vivid parts of the display last for about two to three hours, continuing until dawn at lower brightness levels.

The best nights to enjoy this natural phenomena are those where the moon is not visible. On these nights, the lush greenery along both sides of the riverbank tend to stand extra still, and the fireflies’ display become extraordinarily brighter.

Kampung Belimbing Firefly Park Resort uses a fleet of modern fiberglass boats that are claimed to be electrically powered, ensuring minimal noise and air pollution.

The use of boats that can be operated quietly is important so as not to scare away or disturb the fireflies going about their business.

The jetty at Kampung Belimbing Firefly Park Resort consists of a sturdy floating ramp that caters to the varying tidal levels of the river. This helps to ensure safe embarking and disembarking of boat passengers.

Kampung Belimbing Firefly Park Resort provides tourists with accommodation in the form of chalets erected on stilts along the riverbank.

According to the resort, they have made great efforts not to upset the ecological balance of the area during the construction of the chalets, which are made of wood. Chalet amenities include a balcony, living room, television and hot water, with options including queen beds and twin single beds. Each chalet can fit up to four people.
