KL Forest Eco Park or Taman Eko Rimba KL (formerly known as Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve or Hutan Simpan Bukit Nanas) is one of Malaysia’s oldest permanent forest reserves.

Gazetted in 1906, KL Forest Eco Park is surrounded by a concrete jungle in the form of buildings and skyscrapers.

In fact, the rainforest park is located right next to one of Malaysia’s most recognizable landmarks, the Kuala Lumpur Tower (KL Tower).

As the only patch of tropical rainforest still standing in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, the park serves as the city’s green lung and is home to flora and fauna unique to Malaysia’s tropical rainforest.

The 10.5-hectare forest reserve was gazetted as a Wildlife Reserve and Bird Sanctuary in 1934 and 1950 respectively, with an area of about 5 hectares identified as a Virgin Jungle Reserve.

When visiting KL Tower, visitors should certainly consider stopping by KL Forest Eco Park, as it is located just beside the tower’s entrance and requires no entrance fee.

Over here, nature guides run daily guided tours at 11am, 12:30pm, 2:30pm and 4:30pm, and more information can be obtained from the forest reserve’s dedicated Visitor Center.

Within the forest reserve is a wide range of flora, including creepers, ferns, rare herbs, giant bamboo grasses and climbers. Huge tropical tree species can also be found in this jungle, such as meranti, keruing, chengal and pulai.

Visitors might spot the two local species of monkeys that live in the park, namely the Long-tailed Macaque and Silvered Langur. Other varieties of fauna that roam the area include birds, snakes and squirrels.

A free-of-charge camp site is available for nature lovers who wish to spend more time in the jungle’s lush greenery.

Joggers will enjoy exploring the forest trail, and there is even an outdoor obstacle course where a little stretching and body lifting can be done.

All visitors to the forest reserve should take precautionary measures as there are some slopes along the forest trails that are quite steep. There is also a ladder section that can be tricky to navigate, so visitors should dress casually, ideally sports wear which includes hiking or running shoes.

Opening hours

7.00am to 6.00pm 8.00am to 5.30pm, counter closes at 4.30pm (as of June 2022). Open daily including weekends and public holidays.

How to get to KL Forest Eco Park

The forest reserve is located in front of Jalan Raja Chulan and not far from the Telekom Museum. By car, drive up the hill at KL Tower and pay for the entrance fee and car park; admission to the forest reserve is free subject to entry fees. There are two entrances – the Taman Eko Rimba KL head office located at Jalan Raja Chulan and another at the KL Tower.

By Train
Take the Kelana Jaya Line LRT and stop at Dang Wangi Station, or take the KL monorail and disembark at Bukit Nanas station. Those who use the Ampang Line LRT need to disembark at Masjid Jamek LRT station.

By Bus
The KL Hop-On Hop-Off bus takes you directly to KL Tower which is right next to the park. Taman Eko Rimba KL is also serviced by several buses to and from the city centre.

Agree, from what was once free to now RM 40 is a big jump for people to pay. Very odd.

It is a great shame that the peice is so high for non malaysian visitors. I understand complètement to pay for the entrance but 40 RM for a walk is far too much.

We went there yesterday (22th Dec 2023) but unfortunately the park was closed, we found out upon arrival. It took us a while to find it (we were walking) bad signing for something that seems to be one of the highlights of the city.

Frankly, 40 RM for a walk in the forest is too much. I come from a rich country, ok. But as a senior citizen I am supposed to pay 40 times as much as a local.
I don’t know of any other country where you have to pay to enjoy a natural environment in the city. It’s very nice. Fortunately, I saw it in 2019 when access was still free.
